Commonly, when looking into the cell, we will see the swollen side of the positive plate and the electrolyte solution is red brown when being swung. That’s when the storage battery is heavily overcharged. 

In case that the storage battery is not heavily overcharged, the worn side of the positive will be detected only when the storage battery cover is cut.

The storage battery has some  failed cells: The terminal plates in the cell are not properly contacted with the lead shoulder or the lead shoulder is cracked or the joining bridge is badly connected.

In this case, the storage battery should be replaced by a new one.

Possible causes

The storage battery is not appropriately charged

Solutions: 

Recharge as instructed
Check the charger

The storage battery is contacted in the cell
The storage battery is sulfated

Solutions: Replace the storage battery

Possible causes

Used for wrong purposes: the storage battery which is designed for starting is used for lighting, the storage battery is fully discharged.

Solutions: It is recommended to use the storage battery which is designed for lighting.

The storage battery has been stored for a long time after being fully discharged.

Solution: The storage battery should be fully charged before long-term storage and every month during storage time ,the storage battery should be periodically recharged to avoid sulfatization.

Due to overcharging, overvoltage and the recharger should be checked.

Possible causes

There is a spark after charging the storage battery:

  • Static electrization
  • Short circuit in the car

Check the joints in the electric system

The storage battery has an  error in the cell: bad connectors upper the electrolyte solution, as a result there is a spark when the storage battery starts.

Replace the storage battery

Because the terminal is not connected tightly or due to an inappropriate terminal (type, size,...), as a result the terminal can be easily burnt when being started. Therefore, the selected terminals should be ensured the appropriateness, mechanic and electric strength, and aesthetics.

Possible causes

The storage battery is not appropriately charged

Solution: Recharge as instructed

 

The storage battery's capacity decreases because of long usage

The storage battery has low capacity

The storage battery has an internal error

Solution:   Replace the storage battery

There’re two ways to charge a storage battery:

The first way:

  • Open all buttons of the storage battery.
  • Use a DC source with a current equivalent to 1/10 of the storage battery capacity to charge. For example, the storage battery of 50Ah capacity should be charged by the 5A DC power source.
  • Connect the positive wire (+) of the source with the front positive terminal (+) of the storage battery, and connect the negative wire (-) of the storage battery with the rear negative terminal (-) of the storage battery.
  • When the electrolyte solution of the storage battery cells boils, lower the DC source to a half and continue its charging.
  • The charging finishes after 2-hour constant charging voltage.

The second way: 

  • Open all buttons of the storage battery
  • Use a DC source with a current equivalent to 1/10 of the storage battery capacity to charge. For example, the storage battery of 50Ah capacity should be charged by the 5A DC source.
  • Connect the positive wire (+) of the source with the front positive terminal (+) of the storage battery, and connect the negative wire (-) of the storage battery with the rear negative terminal (-) of the storage battery.
  • When the charging voltage reaches 14.4V, continue its charging for more 5 hours.

Under normal operating conditions, you never need to add acid. Only distilled, deionized or approved water should be added to achieve the recommended levels mentioned above. When a battery is shipped in a dry state or accidental spillage occurs, electrolyte should be added to the battery. Once filled, a battery should only need periodic water addition.
